Tooth Removal from Metropolitan Periodontists, P.A.
If you have been told you need a tooth removed, our Doctors at Metropolitan Periodontists, P.A. would love to help! There are numerous situations in which tooth removal is needed. Some common reasons for tooth removal include:
- Advanced periodontal disease
- Tooth fracture
- Severe tooth decay or infection
How is a tooth extracted?
As a precaution, you may be prescribed an antibiotic to help clear any infection or prevent a new infection. A 3D image of the tooth in question will be taken, as needed. Most teeth can be comfortably removed by just numbing the area using local anesthetic. If you would like to take relaxation medication, please let us know before the procedure so we can schedule accordingly. Dr. Wilson or Dr. Kersten will use instruments to gently loosen ligaments and gum tissue from around the tooth. If the tooth has more than one root, the doctors will section the tooth into smaller pieces to preserve as much of the surrounding bone as possible. Finally, an instrument designed to help remove the tooth from the mouth is used.
Once removed, Dr. Wilson or Dr. Kersten will clean the socket to remove any infected tissue. Often a bone graft will be placed to help maintain the supporting bone in the area, so that an implant can be placed in the future.
The day of the procedure, it is very important to ice the area to minimize swelling and discomfort. We will give you a reusable ice pack before you leave the office.
Our assistants will go over detailed home-care instructions before your procedure.
